Do you know who this woman is? You should. She should be a heroine for all of the West. This is Nazi Paikidze, a Georgian-American (that is born in Russia of Georgian ancestry, moved to the USA, now US citizen) and the current number one female chess player in America. She has declared that she will not travel to Iran to compete in “Islamic dress” at the Women’s world championship to be held in Tehran in February even if this means the end of her career as a chess player. Why is she not being hailed as a heroine of modern feminism for her stance? It seems many feminists don’t want to know if women are struggling against genuine patriarchal and oppressive systems, they prefer their causes to be entirely against white western men.
“I will NOT wear a hijab and support women’s oppression. Even if it means missing one of the most important competitions of my career”
Putting to one side the issue of treating women as something shameful which should be hidden away (or something which men cannot avoid raping) surely it can’t be good for the game of chess in this time of computer programs capable of beating the best players for players to be playing with their ears hidden.
